The passing of Mike Diekman
W. Michael Diekman -- the power behind the Presidents. (05-12-1943 to 08-10-2016) (
William Michael Diekman (Mike to everyone who knew him) of Elgin, Illinois, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday August 10th at Advocate Sherman Hospital, Elgin. He was born May 12, 1943 in Elgin, the son of Clifford and Helen Drahota Diekman. Mike had been a resident of Elgin for all of his life and was a graduate of Elgin High School, University of Illinois and received his Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Mike was employed by Motorola and then the American Nuclear Society for almost 40 years in LaGrange Park before retiring.
He was an avid sports fan, playing baseball from little league through his college years and was a volunteer coach in youth sports, coaching basketball and baseball. He was a proud and loyal Cub’s fan and also enjoyed watching the San Francisco Giants.
During his years at the American Nuclear Society he was active with United Way in LaGrange Park. He traveled worldwide in his international work and in 2014 he received the Nuclear Achievement Award from The Atomic Energy Society of Japan for his outstanding and dedicated support to overseas activities.
Those of us who worked with Mike in support of the International work of the ANS, the INSC and the PNC valued his enthusiasm and his legendary knowledge of what each of the societies had done before and what needed to be done in the future. He was in large measure responsible for many of their successes
Mike is survived by his 2 sisters, Donna (Jerry) Bond and Kathy (Ken) Rabe and by nephew and nieces, Tim (Olivia) Rabe, Jen (Matt) Gaddis and Laura Helena Bond, great nieces and nephews, Oliver, Dashel, Beatrice and Rae and many friends.
